Links to All Local Authority Pages for Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation

This page is under construction but meanwhile provides useful links to the individual local authority pages.

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) is a detailed analysis of deprived areas based on many key measures of deprivation including health, employment, income, housing, education, crime and access to basic services. For the analysis, Scotland is divided into small zones and each is given a rating for each of the measures. These ratings are used to rank each zone on a worst to best basis from 1 (most deprived) to 6976 (least deprived zone).

This page serves two purposes:

  • a link to individual local authority SIMD results with summary tables, charts, data downloads and deprivation hot spot maps.
  • a comparison between local authorities performance against each of the individual measures, see tables below.

Figure 1:  The numbers of citizens living in deprived zones in each of Scotland’s local councils by decile group.  Deep purple, Decile 1 – the most deprived; dark green, Decile 10 – the least deprived.

It is important to note that not all households within a zone will have the same level of deprivation and deprived areas and relatively affluent areas can be located within the same street / location.

Comparative Tables

The data for these tables is based on the percentage of the local authority’s population for each measure that live in its zones that are in the three most deprived deciles in Scotland.  Rank one equates to the the authority with the highest percentage of residents in deprived areas and Rank 32 represents the least deprived.

For example, Glasgow City is ranked 2nd for Overall Deprivation Rank but is  32st for Access which reflects its degree of deprivation overall but that its citizens have excellent access to services.
